Voorbereidingen op de komst van je veulen

Preparing for the arrival of your foal

Congratulations, there is a foal on the way! A fantastic, magical but exciting period!

Gestation period of mare

In large horses, a pregnancy lasts an average of 330-340 days, or 11 months. In miniature horses and Shetland ponies, the gestation period is often shorter; some give birth to a healthy foal after 300 days. In general, you can assume 320-330 days. From day 300, it is important to keep a close eye on your mare to notice any changes in behavior or body and to let her get used to her maternity stall.

The preparation and supplies checklist

It is exciting when your mare is going to give birth, but good preparation is essential. Make a checklist in advance of everything you need and make sure these items are within reach. This prevents stress at the crucial moment.

Essential Supplies:

  • Dry towels;

  • Disinfectant for your hands;

  • Iodine tincture or navel spray for the foal's navel;

  • Breathing spray to support breathing;

  • Tail bandage;

  • Sterile scissors;

  • Umbilical clamp;

  • Lubricant (for checking position);

  • Veterinarian phone numbers;

In our webshop you will find our composed maternity package with the above items collected for you in a handy TiCi storage bag. (Except for the scissors, towels and disinfection for your own hands). This way you have everything at hand for the start of your foaling season!

Extra Tips:

  • Hang a camera in the stable so you can observe your mare without disturbing her.

  • Use a birth alarm that warns you when the mare lies down.

  • Make sure your mare is used to the maternity stall or environment well in advance. This contributes to her rest and the development of the right antibodies for her foal.
